Ukrinform: The first legislative initiative concerning Ukraine this year, calling for recognizing the Kremlin's actions in its war against Ukraine as genocide, has been submitted to the lower chamber of the 119th U.S. Congress.

The Kyiv Independent: A large fire engulfed an oil depot overnight on Jan. 8 in the city of Engels in Russia's Saratov Oblast, various Russian Telegram media channels reported.

ISW: Russian forces may attempt to leverage tactical gains within and near Toretsk and east of Pokrovsk to eliminate the Ukrainian salient southwest of Toretsk.

The Kyiv Independent: The Jan. 9 Ramstein-format summit of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group will focus primarily on supporting Ukraine's defense capabilities in establishing a "credible deterrent force" through 2027, the Pentagon said on Jan. 7.

Politico: NATO will send around 10 ships to guard important underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea by the end of the week, Finnish newspaper Yle reported on Tuesday. The ships will remain at sea until April and be positioned near energy and data cables to deter any sabotage attempts.

The Moscow Times: The Swedish navy said Tuesday it had recovered from the Baltic Sea the anchor of an oil tanker suspected of belonging to Russia's "shadow fleet" and damaging four underwater telecoms cables and one power cable on Dec. 25.

The Kyiv Independent: Ukrainian forces repelled 94 Russian ground assaults in Russia's Kursk Oblast over the past day, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on Jan. 7 amid escalating hostilities in the region.
